The Leipzig Table

While on a recent trip to Germany, we visited the beautiful city of Leipzeg, where we stayed for several days in a lovely hotel. The mezzanine had a lovely and quiet place to sit for coffee, with some side tables, made of steel and stone. The general design of those tables insprired me to create this piece. Here are a number of process photos for the table.

The video below shows the first “run” of a piece of 4/4 African mahogany (one inch thick, rough lumber), which will be turned into the seventeen table legs.

The image below shows the glue-up of the book matched maple burl top (top) and the glue-up of the makore base.

Here are the two parts of the top, prepared for lamination

This is the set up for cutting the maple burl circle from the book matched piece.

Having made a jig for the leg scaffold bases and tops, I clamped them to shape for consistency.

Marking the leg locations on the scaffold bases and tops.

The leg dadoes are cut on all four leg scaffold parts.

The legs are glued into the scaffold parts

The book matched top voids are filled with ebonized epoxy (not the completed scaffold in the background).

Following a great amount of sanding, the table is finished with Osmo hard wax oil, and ready for prime time!
